Ok guys, here's a little breakdown for my latest official artworks for HAMMER04
game that I'm making. I've never done this before, so I'm not really sure if is useful. Created with Photoshop.
It's basically just an idea, a rough sketch. I'm used to even "sketching" each element on a different layer
when I'm starting my work in Photoshop (and not with pen and paper) because I'm not always satisfied with the result and it's easier to correct the position or erasing an element.
At this point I'm drawing ink contours of the illustration. I've drawn even some shadows at this point.
Basic coloring. I'm filling each character on a different layer, just to acquire better results using blending modes
for layers. With solids or delicate gradients as they fit.
Now, we're adding some shadows and lights. For shadows in this particular illustration I've used simply black color and then set layer's fill property at 40% and blending for "Linear Burn". Sometimes I'm softing a shadow using Eraser with a high amount of "feather" (e.g. the eye shadow of the blue slug or a shadow for the hammer). For lights here, I've simply used white color layer without blending.
final background, with some rays using gradient and glow effects. Additionally I've used a gradient layer with multiple color passes at the top of the Layers stack
, with 40% opacity and blending set to "hue" to achieve better coloring for the whole image.
